HOW ERROR MESSAGES WORKS
ERROR MESSAGES ARTWORKS are effectively a replacement 404 page for one of hundreds of websites.
Each documented in the metadata. Art was designed specifically for each website, which includes a visual work, and an embedded message for the visitor.
ERROR MESSAGES also has an element of public participation. Collectors who have minted 404 tokens will work with m0dest and the community to try to get these artwork pages implemented.
Each site has a bounty. There will be a $ token and an amount rewarded per artwork implemented.
Tokens can be sold, or used as currency for collecting art. Tokens art not financial instruments and should be considered for entertainment purposes only.
EXAMPLES
PROJECT RESEARCH
404 Not Found.
A near universal understanding - an unwanted announcement of an unanticipated problem. Every property on the internet has one -nearly all delivering the same message: you are lost. You made a mistake. Every user of the internet has had an interaction with this artifact our our technology infrastructure.
The 404 term originated in the 1980s from Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web. He explained later that his intent was for 404 error messages to be slightly apologetic. Which, after all, is apropos given that the tech itself is built by humans, and humans are, well fallible.
The code itself was born because every link in a system was intended to go somewhere, and a database needs to update links when the target is removed or changed. However these links sometimes refer to data that does not exist, so Berners-Lee decided to solve for the missing content.
The most omnipresent digital asset, the 404, is the result. A page isa servers way of telling a user that they have reached the last page of the internet, or a dead end. Or that they have made a mistake in their data entry.
Standard 404 Pages
The typical 404 error page is often a missed opportunity for deeper engagement with users. Standard 404 pages generally display minimal text, such as "404 Error: Page Not Found" or "Oops! This page doesn't exist.
"These messages are purely functional and offer no emotional or informational value beyond acknowledging the error.
Understanding the Psychological Disruption
When users encounter a 404 error, it typically triggers a cognitive and emotional response, often one of frustration or confusion. This interruption in the user's expected digital pathway can lead to irritation, a short-term reduction in user satisfaction, and potentially a decision to leave the website altogether.
Psychological studies on user interface design suggest that unexpected disruptions can significantly impact user stress levels and overall satisfaction with a digital experience.
The Role of Creative 404 Pages in Mitigating Negative Responses
Creative 404 pages can play a crucial role in transforming the potential negative impact of an error into a positive experience.
By incorporating elements of surprise, humor, and interactive art, these pages can effectively redirect the user's initial frustration towards curiosity and engagement. This approach leverages the psychological principle of 'positive interruption,' where an unexpected, pleasant surprise can enhance mood and improve retention.
ERROR PAPER
1.Introduction
Project Overview
/"error messages" is an experimental art series launched by the artist m0dest, that blends blockchain infrastructure, game mechanics, public participation and economic incentives. The project’s core mission is to explore the use of 404 pages on websites as artistic canvases, creating a connection with visitors rather than traditional “you are lost” directives. The series aims to create a sweeping movement of sites changing their 404 pages to error messages art.
Token Purpose
The $ERROR token is the native digital asset of the "error messages" ecosystem, designed to reward active contributors and committed supporters. Through the $ERROR token, community members can earn bounties for having their artwork implemented on site 404 pages, and earn periodic rewards for holding the token. This model seeks to incentivize holders to participate in spreading the project, and potentially sites/companies for implementing the work.
2. Token Utility and Economics
Utility
The $ERROR token serves multiple purposes within the ecosystem, including:
- Artwork Bounties: $ERROR tokens will be awarded to holders who have their token artworks implemented on sites 404 pages. This bounty system encourages holders to contribute to the project and become part of its evolving narrative.
- Holder Rewards: $ERROR token holders earn rewards based on the length of time they hold their error messages tokens and their token quantities, encouraging long-term participation and fostering community loyalty.
Supply and Distribution
- Total Supply: 1,000,000,000 $ERROR tokens.
Allocation:
- Bounties and Rewards: 40% allocated to bounties for artwork implementation and periodic rewards.
- Team: 5% reserved for project developers and collaborators.
- Reserve Fund: 5% held in reserve to maintain project flexibility and future developments.
3. Technical Architecture
Blockchain
The $ERROR token is built on the Base blockchain for security, accessibility, and interoperability within the larger Web3 ecosystem.
Smart Contracts
The $ERROR smart contract handles several core functions:
- Bounty Distribution: Facilitates the secure and transparent distribution of bounties for selected artworks.
- Holder Rewards: Tracks holding periods and automatically distributes rewards based on predefined criteria.
- Transfer and Management: Standard ERC-20 functionality allowing token transfers, with integrated tracking for eligibility in the rewards program.
Security
Security audits and best practices are implemented to ensure the $ERROR token smart contract is robust against vulnerabilities. This includes third-party audits, rigorous internal testing, and adherence to security best practices in smart contract development.
4. Reward and Bounty System
Artwork Implementation Bounties
- Proof of Implementation: Token holders can submit proof of implemented artworks to the "error messages" private chat, or to m0dest on X.
- Criteria: The artwork must be implemented in production on a site, and captured either via image or live link. The amount of time it stays implemented does not matter.
- Rewards: Collectors will receive bounties in $ERROR tokens, creating both financial and creative incentives for contributors.
Holding Rewards
To encourage holding, the $ERROR token periodically distributes rewards to holders based on:
- Holding Duration: Rewards distributed monthly/quarterly based on how long error messages tokens have been held.
- Token Quantities: Tiered reward levels for holders with significant error messages token balances, fostering loyalty and long-term investment in the project.
Governance (if applicable)
Future governance possibilities may allow $ERROR holders to vote on reward allocations, artwork selection processes, or other community-driven decisions, making $ERROR a truly decentralized community asset.
5. Roadmap
Development Timeline
- Phase 1: Token Launch Initial token deployment, staking, and reward systems implemented.
- Phase 2: Bounty Distributions
- Phase 3: Community Expansion Integrate collaborations, platform partnerships, and potential governance mechanisms to further decentralize the "error messages" ecosystem.
Future Plans
Beyond the initial phases, the "error messages" project intends to explore partnerships with other art and tech communities, build out more interactive reward mechanisms, and experiment with new formats to keep community engagement dynamic and evolving.
6. Legal and Compliance Considerations
Disclaimer
The $ERROR token is issued exclusively for entertainment purposes within the "error messages" project. It is designed as a utility token to engage with, contribute to, and support the artistic community surrounding the "error messages" project.
This is not a financial investment.
The $ERROR token does not represent an ownership stake, security, or entitlement in any legal, financial, or governance structure beyond the specific purposes of the "error messages" ecosystem. Holding $ERROR tokens does not guarantee any future returns or financial gains and should not be construed as a financial investment. The token is intended purely for use within the community, and any rewards received are a reflection of participation and engagement rather than financial performance.
By participating in the "error messages" ecosystem or acquiring $ERROR tokens, you acknowledge and accept that this is a creative project, and any involvement should be understood as supporting an experimental art initiative, rather than as a means to achieve profit.
